[11 11 15] Unsolicited Redesign: Netflix

There's a lot of things that's wrong with Netflix these days. Price increase, Qwikster, then no Qwikster, poor customer service… to name a few. When they first came out, they were revolutionary. Wow, I can watch movies on my computer immediately, no more trips to the video store. But it would seem that with all these changes they've instituted, one thing stands out the most: they have neglected their user interface, it sucks.

Since I interact with Netflix the most on my iPad, I decided to give it a little face lift.

Unsoliticited Redesign: Netflix Mobile

This is my proposed redesign (based on a few hours of work). This layout gives more focus to you as the user. It clearly separates your movies from suggestions. I've pulled out Instant Queue from a tab item to a section on the screen. It doesn't make sense that the queue, my curated content, should be hidden. In the suggestions area, users would be able to scroll sideways to browse more movies within a category and scroll up and down for more categories. I've also done away with the bottom navigation and included it on top with the header to save screen space.

This is what it currently is.

If you'd like to see how it would look on your iPad, here is the landscape version. And the portrait version.

[10 07 02] Unsolicited Redesign: Apartment Therapy

I like Apartment Therapy. I really do. I'm such a home maker on the inside, it's embarrassing. What I can't stand is how narrow the content of the site is, it drives me completely bonkers. I had some free time today and decided to give my design-skills a whirl. Here's what I quickly whipped up.

The major focus is making the content area wider. Then reorganizing the content a little bit to lessen the clutter and visual noise. The header/main navigation now prominently displays their sub-brands rather than the category name they have before. See it larger.
